A once-popular Airlie institution is on its way back, with the re-launch of cane toad racing at the Esplanade’s Beach Plaza this weekend.
Toadmaster Ken Watts will be revitalising the “toadally awesome infamous Airlie Beach toad races” which originated in the 1980s, raising in excess of $10,000 for local charities and generally putting “smiles on dials”.
“Airlie Beach cane toad racing was part of what Airlie Beach was famous for. This is fun for the whole family. We want families to go away with the sorts of memories that can bring them back – believe it or not toads can accomplish that,” Mr Watts said.
“Lots of people see cane toads as vermin and horrible, but we North Queenslanders know how to turn them into fun. If you don’t believe us come down and see the show.
“We have a mountain of prizes to give away – all sorts of freebies from the restaurants in the Plaza and Whitsunday Watersports have partnered with us as a sponsor,” he said.
Toad racing will take place at the Beach Plaza this Saturday October 8, kicking off between 6 and 7pm. Part of the proceeds from Saturday’s event will be donated to the Whitsunday Youth Space program.
