A number of commercial tenants in the country town of Airlie Beach are paying capital city rates in rent.
Trish Hoerlein (previous franchisee of the ice creamery Baskin Robbins) told The Guardian prior to losing her shop she was paying more per square metre for street frontage in the so-called ‘golden triangle’ of Airlie Beach than the asking rate for the Baskin Robbins in Sydney ’s Circular Quay.
“In fact it would have been close to double,” Ms Hoerlein said.
“The attitude was – well it’s Airlie Beach . If you want to be here that’s what you’ve got to pay”.
